In 2022, the state-of-the-art Wellesley College Science Complex in Massachusetts opened to students and staff, combining inspired renovations of existing buildings with almost 100,000 sq. ft. of newly-constructed space, all on target to achieve LEED Platinum Certification.
Unicel Architectural was engaged to supply its load-bearing Timber Curtin Wall (THERM+ H-I 76 on 80 mm) in Douglas Fir glulam with 16m spliced mullions for various parts of the complex. With German technology at the core and growing rapidly in popularity, Timber Curtain Walls combine the elegance and warmth of wood in extensive glazed facades, with super-clean sightlines that provide maximum connection of occupants to natural outdoor surroundings.
Complimenting the Timber Curtain Walls is the use of mass timbers in the central and welcoming atrium in the main Science Complex building. Known as the ‘Focus,’ the atrium spans several floors and opens directly to the outside, with mass timbers featured prominently in staircases, ceiling rafters, window framing and sculptural furnishings.
The Complex boasts a total of 36 classrooms, 108 labs and 158 offices. It also includes an existing observatory, a plant conservatory and arboretum, along with several reimagined new spaces such as ‘living laboratories’ and innovative outdoor communal seating areas.
Dynamically designed to inspire and energize on approach, the exterior of the Complex features many types of historical and modern finishes, from original brick to shiplap and zinc façade paneling to the extensive glass and warm natural wood in the Timber Curtain Walls, all set against the backdrop of the stunning lakefront.
Unicel Architectural is pleased that the Timber Curtain Walls at Wellesley College Science Complex will provide students and staff with inspiration and comfort for many decades to come, in terms of temperature, sound, an abundance of natural light and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
