The Environmental Benefits of a Timber Curtain Wall

Timber curtain wall

We’ve long known that timber is superior to steel as a sustainable building envelope material, thanks to its renewability, low embodied carbon level, and low thermal conductivity.

But what’s less well known is that timber is also a near-perfect product for use specifically in curtain walls for the same reasons.

Architects, designers, builders, and LEED professionals all understand the environmental benefits of wood building products when it comes to the construction of passive and net zero buildings. Timber curtain walls (TCWs) can be a huge part of that thanks to their inherent design flare, ability to accommodate big glass installations, and sustainability:

  • TCWs are up to 72 percent more energy efficient than a standard curtain wall.
  • TCWs experience less energy loss compared to standard curtain walls or windows.
  • TCWs can achieve such energy efficiencies because they’re better able to manage thermal conduction, thermal convection, and thermal radiation.
  • Wood provides natural insulation and can help improve interior temperature control.
  • Wood products are approximately 50 percent carbon by dry weight, making them effective carbon sinks that store large amounts of carbon for long timeframes.

Indeed, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research has demonstrated that if just 10 percent of new buildings were made of timber it would result in 10 million tons of carbon storage that wouldn’t take place otherwise.

TCWs can also accommodate load-bearing use cases to give architects the flexibility to create truly unique designs while also being friendly to the planet.

Key benefits and features:

  • Available in black spruce, douglas fir, and custom wood species.
  • Promotes passive solar heating and natural daylight for better health, productivity, and a sense of well-being.
  • Snap-on metal or wood face caps cover and seal the TCW’s pressure plates with a seamless, stylish look.
  • TCW’s outfitted with Unicel Architectural’s Vision Control® advanced louvered glazing technology can improve building efficiency, privacy, and comfort while reducing glare.
  • The ultimate in form and function thanks to numerous cap and façade options and customizations.
  • Outstanding water management, condensation control, and thermal movement accommodation.
