Daylight is a unique design tool that enhances the power of natural lighting without compromising building aesthetics and functionality. As easy as it might seem to work with daylight, controlling it is a matter of understanding how to emphasize its benefits and how to protect building occupants from its unwanted effects (glare, heat build-up, UV rays).

Unicel has developed Vision Control® and Vision Control® Mini to manage the quantity and quality of light transmission through fenestration. Thanks to the precise control mechanism, the louvers can rotate 180 degrees, no matter if they are installed horizontally or vertically. By the simple rotation of the louvers, Vision Control® contributes to a better natural light distribution within the room: the depth of the room can be daylighted, while still reflecting the light back outside. Even when half-opened, the amount of interior light is pleasantly noticeable. This is also attributable to light diffusion through the louvers.

Moreover, the optical property of the Vision Control® louver surface helps reduce glare and protects against fading due to damaging UV rays. This makes Vision Control® the ideal wall application for art galleries, museums, libraries and other areas where light control is an absolute necessity.

In large buildings, for example, daylighting reduces energy needs for lighting in atrium ground floors and adjacent spaces. Vision Control® is designed so that sufficient daylight can enter the building without allowing excessive unwanted solar gains. Thanks to the versatility of the louvers, Vision Control® units are able to reduce the incoming solar gains to the minimum indoor illuminance requirement. Skylights with only clear glass often enhance the attractiveness of a building’s interior, being an extra source of daylight, but the excessive solar gains in the summer can compromise this effect. This is why by installing insulating louvered glass in exterior applications, the need for artificial lighting and cooling equipment is significantly reduced.

The high operating costs reported for atria are mainly due to the energy consumption for electrical lighting, heating, and cooling. Daylighting alone does not ensure significant savings without a system that controls the internal illumination.
