Case Studies

Wells Fargo Financial

The context:

In order to keep up with its rapidly growing business and expanding customer base, Wells Fargo Financial, the consumer finance subsidiary of Wells Fargo & Company, needed to enlarge its office space on Walnut Street, in Downtown Des Moines, IA, the headquarter it had been occupying since 1897.

Wells Fargo’s expanding presence had been evident in central Iowa for several years, therefore raising a new building in Des Moines was foremost a matter of creating new jobs that would eventually add value to the company’s business. At that time, the headquarters were serving customers throughout North America, the Caribbean and the Pacific Islands. The new addition was designed to make the home office in Des Moines an integral piece of the company’s growth.

The challenge:

Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck (HLKB) Architecture was appointed to develop the new building that had to be integrated with the existent office tower and the surrounding streets landscape. One of the most important requirements was to introduce daylight to core areas of the building. To achieve this, the architect turned to Unicel for a solution to fit the new 11-storey addition into the busy city center, while keeping natural light as a motivation driver for the building occupants.

Unicel’s solution:

Unicel provided the aluminum curtain wall system that envelops the curb lantern atop the building. This makes Wells Fargo one of the most recognizable flagship buildings in Des Moines. The lantern top was made out of one hundred 45-foot (14m) glass panels that enclose a reception area and a training and conference room.
